Issiac Wingerter and Hunter Howie combined for 42 points Monday night to help lead the Chester Yellow Jacket freshmen past Anna Jonesboro 69-59 in a non-conference matchup played in Marie Juergens Gym.
With the win, the freshmen bounce back to the .500 mark with a record of 7-7. Next up is a road game tonight at Sparta against the Bulldogs. Game time at Dwight Fulton Gym is set for 6:15pm. Chester fell behind early, trailing 8-3 after the first three minutes but then outscored the Wildcats 13-4 over the final five minutes to take a 16-12 lead. The young Yellow Jackets led 27-24 at halftime despite being outscored 12-11 in the second quarter. "Changing our defense early in the 1st period seemed to get us going both offensively and defensively. Our defense created some easy scores," said Chester freshman coach Mike Schwarting. The Yellow Jackets took control though in the third as they outscored the visiting Wildcats 19-12 and held a 46-34 lead heading to the fourth quarter. In the final eight minutes, the two teams combined for 46 points with each team scoring 23. Chester won the game in the fourth quarter from the free throw line as they finished 6-for-8 in the quarter and 14-for-20 in the game en route to the win. "Offensively, we had a pretty good one-two punch, tonight, with Hunter and Issiac scoring often," said Schwarting. "Hunter seems to have found his niche running the show and scoring as well." Hunter Howie led Chester with 23 points while Issiac Wingerter tossed in 19. "I was really happy for Issiac," said Schwarting. "He has been working hard to improve his game and tonight it seemed to pay off. He was able to break his man down off the dribble and score, and he was also able to hit a couple of perimeter shots which made him difficult to guard." Devon Eggers (9), Daulton Stahlheber (6), Liam Canady (4), William Stafford (4) and Zach Poe (4) also scored for Chester. "This was a good team win for us," said Schwarting. "Everyone got some quality minutes and responded well. It was nice to see all seven players reach the scoring column." |
