In the blink of an eye…it was over.
The final 10 seconds proved to be the difference Tuesday in the Chester Yellow Jackets' home BDC West Division lost to visiting Goreville. With the loss, Chester falls to 11-9 overall and 3-4 in the West Division. Next up is a home game against Elverado Friday night at Daniel Colbert Memorial Gym. Chester jumped out to an 18-15 lead after the first quarter but in the second, the Blackcats went on a 14-2 run to take a 29-20 lead with four minutes to play in the half. Goreville would outscore Chester 21-9 in the second to take a 36-27 lead heading to the locker room at halftime. In the third quarter, Chester's Kyle Landon literally put the Yellow Jackets on his back as Chester fought their way back into the game. Landon scored 13 of Chester's 23 points in the quarter as the Yellow Jackets managed to send the game to the fourth quarter tied at 50-50. The Yellow Jackets outscored Goreville 23-14 in the third. In the closing seconds of the game, Goreville's Nate Webb went to the line with :10.9 seconds left after Chester was whistled for a hand check foul. Webb made both free throws to give Goreville a two-point lead. While the Yellow Jackets were inbounding the ball, Chester coach Brad Norman was trying to call a timeout which could be heard throughout the gym however it was not granted by the officials. The inbound pass resulted in a turnover and then Chester was whistled for a foul. Norman and Chester fans erupted at the lack of the timeout being called. Norman was so vocal, and rightfully so, that he was hit with a technical foul by the same official who failed to give Chester a timeout. The end result however was Webb went to the free throw line, connected on four free throws and Goreville got the ball at halfcourt. The Blackcats, now up six, inbounded the ball and ran out the clock to escape Colbert Gym with the conference win 64-58. Kyle Landon led Chester with a game high 23 points while Caleb Arbeiter finished with 10 points. Link Cushman (8), Chris Schwartz (8), Jake Lochhead (6), Cody Mileur (3), and Matt Heberlie (2) also scored for Chester. Nate Webb led Goreville with 15 points while Dayton Tripp tossed in 13. Chester finished just 7-for-18 from the foul line while Goreville finished 15-for-20. |
